The Obsolete Man … 25 min of GOLD

I’m a big fan of the Twilight Zone… watch it every night.
Last nights episode was so good, I just had to share!  😀

Rod Serling giving his social/political commentary in his entertaining fashion at its best!  It deals with themes of Orwellian totalitarianism, euthanasia, collectivism and religion.  The fascist State determines whether people are obsolete or not (they determined that with God first) and if they are, they get liquidated.

“You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future; not a future that will be, but one that might be. This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace.”

“The Chancellor – the late Chancellor – was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so was the State, the entity he worshiped. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete. A case to be filed under ‘M’ for mankind in the Twilight Zone.”

  1. AWESOME, Teach!!!!!!!!

I was such a Twilight Zone freak as a kid, my mother bought me the hardback “Twilight Zone Companion” (which I still own, by the way), with all of the episodes, backstories, etc, for the entire series.

I’m usually amazed by how many folks know what the TZ was, …yet then admit to never having watched it.

    • Did you watch the episode JTR? I thought I had seen every episode available (hello, my name is Teach and I’m a Zone’r) but had never seen this one! I was pretty stoked about that, so shared. LOL

      • Yep, saw all four of his episodes. Plus, saw both of his episodes in Night Gallery (Serling’s post-TZ show).

This episode wasn’t that shocking back in 1961. Heck, disagreeing with it may have been, but not the episode itself.
Today, it’d be grounds for a lawsuit.
